Abbott Labs, the makers of the popular baby formula Similac, have issued a nationwide voluntary recall after a batch of the powdered formula was found to contain insect parts, according to a recent article published in the Baltimore Sun. The manufacturer recalled nearly 5 million cans and plastic containers of Similac after a beetle infestation was found at the plant where the formula was made. Some parents also reported finding insect parts in the formula.
According to Dr. Joseph Gigante, associate professor of pediatrics at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, the risk of harm to children from accidentally ingesting insect parts or larvae is slim. Children are most likely to experience mild stomach upset, possibly causing them to be more fussy than normal. In rare cases, a child might experience an allergic reaction. Parents should take children to the doctor if their symptoms last more than 24 hours, and they should call emergency services immediately if an allergic reaction becomes life-threatening.
