The Maryland State Highway Administration is helping keep pedestrians safe this Halloween by lending out reflective vests at no charge. Trick-or-treaters and their adult chaperones are encouraged to wear the vests over their costumes – or as part of a construction worker costume – in order to be more easily seen in the dark. This will hopefully reduce the number of Maryland pedestrian accidents by giving motorists additional warning that people are out and about on Halloween night.
The safety vests can be borrowed from State Highway Administration Maintenance shops and are available for pickup on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday before Halloween; from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Vests will be loaned on a first-come, first-served basis and must be returned by Friday, November 6.
The Maryland State Highway Administration also recommends that pedestrians and motorists be on alert on Halloween night. Drivers must always stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, drive slowly and always obey the speed limit, and are encouraged to avoid driving between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Halloween night, when most trick-or-treaters are out. For pedestrians, the Maryland State Highway Administration recommends looking both ways before crossing the street, only crossing at marked intersections, and wear bright colors and reflective clothing.
