The American Honda Motor Company, in cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), is recalling 1,512,107 vehicles due to a defect in the automatic transmission control module that may increase the risk of a car crash or pedestrian personal injury. The recall is expected to begin on August 31.
The outer race of the secondary shaft bearing may break during certain driving styles, which may cause the malfunction indicator light to illuminate, create abnormal noise and allow contact between an electronic sensor housing within the transmission and the transmission idle gear. This subsequently may cause a short circuit which stalls the engine, increasing the risk of a car accident. Furthermore, broken pieces of the outer race or ball bearing from the secondary shaft could lodge themselves in the parking pawl, which may cause the vehicle to roll even after it is placed in “Park.” This increases the risk of injury to pedestrians who may be in the path of the rolling car.
The Honda vehicles affected by this recall were manufactured from July 1, 2004, through September 3, 2010, and include certain model year:
- 2005-2010 Accords;
- 2007-2010 CR-Vs; and
- 2005-2008 Elements.
Once the safety recall begins later this month, Honda will notify owners and instruct them to take their vehicle to a Honda dealer, who will update the automatic transmission control module software free of charge. For more information, owners may call Honda’s customer service at 1-800-999-1009. The recall campaign number is R89.
