The Hyundai Motor Company, in cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), is recalling an estimated 205,233 vehicles as the result of a driver side air bag defect that may cause air bag deployment failure in the event of a crash, which increases the risk of serious injury to the driver.
The clock spring contact assembly for the air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) may become damaged through use over time. This, consequently, may cause the air bag’s electrical circuit to develop a high resistance condition which may cause air bag deployment failure. Should a traffic accident occur, a failed air bag deployment greatly increases the risk of serious injury or death to the driver.
The recalled vehicles include the following:
- Model year 2007-2008 Santa Fe CUVs, manufactured from April 19, 2006 through March 20, 2008; and
- Model year 2007-2008 Veracruz Crossover Utility Vehicles (CUV), manufactured from December 26, 2006 through March 21, 2008.
Owners of the affected vehicles should take their vehicles to a Hyundai dealer who will replace the driver side air bag clock spring contact assembly, if necessary, free of charge. Additional information is available through the company customer service connect center at 1-800-633-5151. The recall campaign number is 103.
