Frederick County Collision Kills Damascus Motorist

Maryland’s local NBC affiliate’s website, your4state.co, recently reported that a two-vehicle crash that took the life of a Damascus motorist is currently being investigated. The accident took place on Bill Moxley Road in Frederick County, and involved a 1989 Chevrolet Cavalier and a 1995 Chevrolet Corsica. Authorities believe the two vehicles struck each other as they were coming over a hill. Five people were injured in the crash, with only the driver of the Cavalier succumbing to his injuries. The other accident victims riding in the Cavalier, a 17-year-old boy and a 19-year-old girl, sustained injury and were taken to Baltimore Shock Trauma for treatment. The driver of the Corsica, a 51-year-old man, and his female passenger also sustained injury and were also taken to Baltimore Shock Trauma. The conditions of all individuals involved were not made public.

Maryland Street Intersection Accident Kills One, Injures One

One person died and another suffered major personal injury after a van and a landscaper’s truck collided in Montgomery County. According to a news report in the Baltimore Sun, the fatal traffic collision occurred in the 28000 block of Kemptom Road in Damascus, Maryland. Police said the driver of the van died at the scene and that the driver of the landscaping truck suffered several injuries and is in critical condition. Police are still investigating what caused the fatal crash.

Baltimore Proposes Speeding Cameras Near School and Construction Zones

A proposal that would allow speed cameras to be installed around school and construction zones in Baltimore, Maryland, received an initial stamp of approval from the City Council recently. If the measure passes, the cameras could be online and in use by October, the Baltimore Sun reports in an account. This is apparently part of the city’s effort to address the problem of speeding around schools and construction zones. The use of speed cameras was first proposed in 2007 as part of a traffic control plan. However the city needed approval from the General Assembly before these cameras could be used.

In May, Maryland legislators passed a law allowing the use of speed cameras within half a mile of school zones and road construction sites. If caught speeding, a motorist could receive a $40 ticket in the mail based on vehicle registration and license plate number. State law requires that signs be posted in areas where these speed cameras are in use.

Hopefully, these speed cameras will do to speeding motorists what red light cameras do to red light runners. Research and studies have found that at intersections with red light cameras, motorists are far less likely to run a red light, which often is the cause some car accidents in Maryland. Ocean City Hit-and-Run Auto Accident Kills One, Injures One

Maryland State Police arrested a hit-and-run driver who they say struck and killed a bicyclist and injured another in an Ocean City auto accident in Maryland. According an Associated Press news report, the two bicyclists were riding their bikes on the Route 50 bridge west of Ocean City where they were struck down by a pickup truck. The driver of the truck did not stop at the scene. A witness followed the truck and called police. Authorities were able to pull over the truck and arrest its driver, charging him with negligent homicide by motor vehicle while under the influence, driving under the influence of alcohol and failing to remain at the scene of an accident involving the death of another.
