“Vests for Visibility” Promotes Pedestrian Safety This Halloween
By admin on October 28, 2010
The Maryland State Highway Administration is helping keep pedestrians safe this Halloween by lending out reflective vests at no charge. Trick-or-treaters and their adult chaperones are encouraged to wear the vests over their costumes β or as part of a construction worker costume β in order to be more easily seen in the dark. This will hopefully reduce the number of Maryland pedestrian accidents by giving motorists additional warning that people are out and about on Halloween night.
The safety vests can be borrowed from State Highway Administration Maintenance shops and are available for pickup on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday before Halloween; from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Vests will be loaned on a first-come, first-served basis and must be returned by Friday, November 6.
The Maryland State Highway Administration also recommends that pedestrians and motorists be on alert on Halloween night. Drivers must always stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, drive slowly and always obey the speed limit, and are encouraged to avoid driving between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Halloween night, when most trick-or-treaters are out. For pedestrians, the Maryland State Highway Administration recommends looking both ways before crossing the street, only crossing at marked intersections, and wear bright colors and reflective clothing.

Maryland Man Killed in Fatal Pedestrian Accident
By injuheis on August 25, 2009
A 67-year-old Maryland man was killed in a pedestrian accident on a residential street after he was hit by an out-of-control car, according to this news report. The man apparently parked his car and walked out to get a real estate pamphlet from a front yard. Around that time, an 18-year-old driving a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire lost control of his car while negotiating a curve, overcorrected and struck the pedestrian. The Pontiac rolled over and rested on his roof. The pedestrian died in the hospital of numerous injuries sustained during the collision. The teenager was treated at a hospital and released with non life-threatening injuries. Alcohol was not a factor in this car crash, officials said.
Pedestrian accidents or traffic collisions happen for a variety of reasons. Some involve distracted, speeding or careless drivers. Others involve drivers operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In some cases, a dangerous roadway could play a role. It’s not clear what exactly caused the teenager to lose control and strike the pedestrian in this particular Maryland pedestrian accident.
