Westminster Teen Dies in Maryland Auto Accident

A teenager from Westminster died in an early morning accident on Sunday, January 11, 2009, according to this Carroll County Times report. A spokesman for the Maryland State Police said that Nicholas Tyler Byron, 17, was northbound on Md. 97 near Old Hanover Road when he lost control of his SUV, skidded off the road, and struck a telephone pole shortly after 5 A.M.

The teen was driving a GMC Jimmy Sport Utility Vehicle, and law enforcement officials investigating the accident said that Byron was wearing his seat belt and the airbag deployed when Byron hit the telephone pole. Officials said that weather, road conditions, and speed were contributing factors to the accident and the teen’s SUV was the only vehicle involved in the Maryland auto accident.

Despite efforts by state and local authorities to lower the number of Maryland auto accidents involving teens, a disturbing number of them are killed and injured each year.
